Silver Screen Style Ballroom was created by Lou Brockman and Heather Gehring, who together and on their own, have been appearing on American television and in movies since the early days of their careers, in such films as Disney’s Enchanted, Mona Lisa Smile, Little Manhattanand on television for such hits as HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, as well as being featured dancing on The Oprah Winfrey Show where Lou nabbed the title of National Dirty Dancing Champion from Dirty Dancing,choreographer Kenny Ortega. Other credits include Gossip Girl, MTV, NBC’s Today Show (segment on celebrity weddings), the Maury PovichShow, FOX News Morning Show, the Tony Danza Show, HGTV, and Good Morning America’s Dancing With the Moms where Lou and his “Mom” were winners in a take off on Dancing With the Stars.
Lou and Heather are a favorite of the stars, receiving praise and rave reviews from Mel Brooks, “You’re smooth and graceful, but when you got to be hot you’re hot!”, and Liza Minnelli who said, “I haven’t seen dancing like this since I watched my mother (Judy Garland) dancing with Fred Astaire in the movies.” Emmy and Grammy nominated singer/entertainer Michael Feinstein called them “Fabulous”, and the New York Times labeled their style as “Slyly sophisticated”. They have even had the pleasure of dancing with such greats as Gloria Estefan and Tommy Tune.
Heather and Lou have been performing their live show together for over a decade. Most recently they took their Silver Screen Style of dance and choreography to the Broadway stage in Gotham Holiday Swing, dancing to the live music of the Grammy winning orchestra Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks. They have performed at numerous prestigious venues: Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Hartford’s Bushnell Theater, and NYC’s infamous Rainbow Room. As a couple they performed as Guest Artists at Jacob’s Pillow, a mecca for modern day dance, and were guest artists on the cruise line Norwegian Sun. They were also the first dancer/choreographers to bring a live dance show to Cal Tech.
In addition to their own performances, Lou and Heather have taught master classes for Hunter College and NYU in New York City and collaborated with such greats as Wynton Marsalis for his concert and lecture at Harvard University were they performed on stage with Mr. Marsalis and also taught their own Master Class in Silver Screen Ballroom.
Heather and Lou each started their dance training at a very young ageand trained with the best. Heather studied ballet from age two onwards and became a professional at sixteen, later becoming a member of the Hartford Ballet Company during it’s heyday under the direction of Michael Utoff. Heather studied at Boston Ballet and NYC Ballet’s SAB, and studied with Suki Shorer who wrote the Balanchine technique manuals. Lou began his ballroom training in Chicago, studying with his coach Dagmar Jarvel who in turn was trained by the legendary Fred Astaire. Ms. Jarvel wrote the original Fred Astaire Manuals.
